Course Overview

The main objective of a Risk Based Process Safety Management approach is to assist an organisation build and operate a more effective process safety management system and will enable delegates to design or improve each process safety activity associated with the management of process safety within their organization.

This course is based on Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS) Risk Based Process Safety (RBPS) Management approach, described in the CCPS book Guidelines for Risk Based Process Safety (2007). The course covers the four pillars and twenty elements that define the structure for the RBPS approach. The key approach is the implementation and application of the four pillars, which are:

  1. Commit to process safety: Ensure that management and employees care about process safety, ensure that there is acceptance and compliance with standards and demonstrate commitment to stakeholders
  2. Understand hazard and risk: Know what you operate, identify hazards and manage and minimize risk through analysis etc.
  3. Manage risk: Know how to operate and maintain the process, control changes and manage incidents
  4. Learn from experience: Investigate incidents, monitor performance through reviews, audits and KPIs, and ensure that findings are acted effectively upon

Training Methodology

This practical and results-oriented Risk Based Process Safety Management training course is based on adult learning concept. It incorporates short inspiring lectures with structured lessons from the learning manual; PowerPoint slides with videos to enhance learning; case studies for review and discussion, ample time for questions and answers; training activities to reinforce key concepts within a concentrated but enjoyable learning environment.

Delegates will be actively involved at all stages of the course through discussion, participatory exercises and quizzes. A comprehensive set of course notes will be provided to all delegates including the CCPS book, Guidelines for Risk Based Process Safety (RBPS).
